Product description

What is this product?

A sustainable Martenitsa-brooch printed on plantable paper enriched with a mix of poppy, forget-me-not and celosia seeds.

The tradition of giving one another “Martenitsas” – ornaments made of red and white yarn is quite common here in Bulgaria. Every year, on 1st March, we give each other Martenitsas to celebrate the beginning of spring and wish one another prosperity and good health.

The name Martenitsa is coming from the official name of the celebration - Baba Marta . In Bulgarian folklore the name Baba Marta (Bulgarian: Баба Марта, "Grandma March") evokes a grumpy old lady whose mood swings very rapidly. The common belief is that by wearing the red and white colors of the Martenitsa, people ask Baba Marta for mercy and for a fruitful spring.

If you’d like to join us on the celebration of Baba Marta, you can clip your Martenitsa-brooch on a blouse, blazer, jacket or a scarf.

Our plantable Martenitsa-brooch also makes a great gift for family members, friends, colleagues and anyone else you’d like to wish “Happy Baba Marta” to.

What materials is the Martenitsa-brooch made of?

We printed the design on recycled plantable paper, enriched with a mix of poppy, forget-me-not and celosia seeds. In the spirit of circular economy, we strengthened its back side with leftover plantable paper that we had from a previous corporate order.

The yarn used for the Martenitsas is woollen, the glue holding the brooch to the paper is made of flour, water, sugar and vinegar. The Martenitsas are made locally here in Bulgaria by the social enterprise “Atelie Décor” which employs people with disabilities.

Thank you for contributing towards this noble cause : )

How can I plant my Martenitsa?

Remove its ribbon and the metal brooch. Then, tear the paper into small pieces, put them in a flower pot or dig a hole. Cover with 3 layers of soil, water every day and you'll see the first results in a week's time. The best time to plant outdoors is from May till October, whereas you can plant it in a flower pot at home all year round. Make sure that there is enough light, warmth and water.

Are there any other types of plantable Martenitsas?
